12/20/2011

 Hello people!!!!

How the heck are you guys?! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!! From the MTC...5 days before. But Merry Christmas none the less!!! I pray that everyones Christmas is wonderful this year. And the only way it will be wonderful is remember our Savios, Jesus Christ. So, it's up to you! Do you want a good Christmas?
This week has been awesome! We are teaching lessons by the Spirit now! We got a baptism commitment and We are getting new investigators and Im loving it! but check this out...One day, I had the worst day. I couldnt even construct a regular sentence. SO BAD! The next day, the best day Ive had so far. Isnt crazy how God works? I was humbled. He makes you realize the need for Him and truly humble yourself before Him before progressing! GREAT lesson I learned! Oh, we had incredible talks this week. Sister Elaine Dalton..AMAZING! Elder Heaton...AMAZING!!! Im blessed. Truly blessed to hear these servants of the Lord talk. And this week, Im hoping for 2 more! Elder Holland or Elder Uchdorf would be so cool! Cant wait!! Check back next week for details!
Christmas this year is going to be different. Its going to be hard not being with friends and family, but this Christmas is a Jesus Christ Christmas...and isnt that how they all are supposed to be? We are going to have sacrament meeting with the WHOLE MTC! Thousands of people getting the sacrament. I cant wait! And we get 2 movies. Im really pumped!!!
Okay...the following is a true story that might be the best part of the MTC thus far.. Read carefully. Friday. Fantastic day. We got a new elder in our district only for the weekend (thats not important though) Anyway, he needed to practice piano because he was going to play in his ward. So just he and I went while the other two Elders went back. We were supposed to be back by 1:30 but didnt get back until 1:45. I thought of an excuse. Anyway, right when i walked in, elder carver said "what took you guys so long?" I went on to tell him how President Brown (the mtc president) stopped us because he heard us playing. He asked us if we would play in the next devotional because we sounded so good. I told them that Brown said that we can have 7 people singing. Elder carver was super excited. Elder Ham just about peed his pants. Well, there were only 3 of us singers so they went and recruited 3 others to come and sing. At this point, i wasnt expecting this little prank to last this long but it was too funny so i kept it going. Next thing I know, we were practicing our parts and practicing singing this. I have no clue how i wasnt laughing, but I held it in! They were saying stuff like "Guys! we are going to be famous! theyre going to broadcast us to all the MTC's!" and "When we are judged, God is going to play back this preformance and he is going to be so proud!" and "Guys..we arent good. WE are going to have to skip dinner and study to practice!!" Well...I was going to keep it up all the way to the devotional, but i didnt want to skip classes and study time. So, I told them it was all a joke! Elder Carver actually said "No, youre just kidding! Nice try! I cant wait!" He really thought that I was kidding about pranking them and he kept practicing. Need less to say, they were mad. But I was happy. One of the funnier things ive done in my life and! If only you guys could have seen it, you would have been proud!!! :)

Well, other than that, not a lot going on. I am scuba diving in the scriptures right now. the pages look like a journal and coloring book! Im proud of it. Language is still getting better. and oh...IM LEAVING SUPER SOON!! I dont feel ready, but definately ready to get out of here and help the people waiting for the truth! There is something special about this work! I dont have anymore time so no shout outs. But if you want to write me, then go ahead!! I could always read some love! ;)

Anyway, I have to fly. Have a wonderful day, week, and Christmas! I love you all. Thanks for the support, love, and prayers! God is real. and Jesus Christ lives!!

Um Abraço,
Elder Lakey!!

Hello family, friends, and family of friends!

Is it December? I dont even know. Word on the street is that Christmas is in like 12 days? Sheeesh!! Crazy. As I type this, snow is finally falling in the great Utah! Its super pretty! Does anyone else have snow? Are your Christmas vacations started?
Whats new in the life of Elder Lakey? Well, first of all, I finished the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ on Wednesday. I started it when I got here so a little over a month! Not too bad! I love loved it! Read it!! What else? Oh, we got Sylvestro, an investigator, baptized this last week!! We got a new one yesterday and he is a Pastor and knows the Bible very well. This is going to be harder, but we will kill him with Love and the Spirit!! Nothing else has been different really. Sunday for Fireside, the BYU Mens Chorus came and did a Christmas program thingy. It was super good and really fun to hear some Christmas songs. I am still trying to speak Portuguese all day every day. Some days are better than other but its coming along. I feel like I've jumped up a little bit this week. I think I had a really super spiritual lesson this week. I felt the Spirit. I sometimes get down on myself because I cant get the exact sentence I want out, but then I think "DUDE, Ryken, Shush up!!! Its been less than 6 weeks and you are TEACHING in a completely new language!!" It amazes me when I stop and think. God has blessed me with SO much learning its incredible! I have to admit, my brain is completely fried at the end of the day, but thats how we learn. And Im loving it. Another thought I had this week..."Ryken, you leave in 3 weeks" HOLY GUACAMOLE!! I will be teaching real people in real Brasil in 3 weeks! Thats nuts! Time is flying by. I dont know about you all, but ive been gone for a month and a half now. That blows my mind!!! Elder Ham got a hammock in the mail this week. We set that up and take some nice relaxing breaks at night. I love it!! Elder Carver is still here. Still no Visa. Maybe today? We will see. Im really hoping for an Apostle tonight. Theres a good chance that I will hear from at least two more before I leave. I am blessed immensely! I love my Heavenly Father. I love Jesus Christ. I love this work. There is nowhere on Earth that I would rather be. Seek Him. You will find Him and He will bless you!!

SHOUT OUTS:
Adam- Dude, that was awesome! Thanks for sending me some stats and sports updates. Brandon Roy? Crap. That sucks. Oh well, they will pick it up. I think thats all...Im sorry if I forgot someone. Nothing against you, just major brain overload and not much time to write these things!

So, I need to apologize at this time. Why? Because I probably send you all the same thing over and over again. I can never remember what I write. You may get bored of these and I apologize. One of these weeks, Im going to have something crazy spectacular to say! Nothing more to say I guess. You all are in my prayers. I pray for you daily. I hope you all are happy and safe! Remember to smile and never forget your Savior, Jesus Christ! He lives. Also, you all are amazing for what you do for me. What you have been to me in the past, and what you still continue to be for me now. I love you all! Never forget it!! Have a fantastic week this week and I look forward to writing you next week!

Um Abraço,

Well, its already been another week. 5 weeks already? Wowzers! This week was incredibly hard for me. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday i was very down. But of course, God to the rescue!! The weekend was fantastic! Want to know something Ive been doing? Okay cool, I will tell you. Ive been speaking in Portuguese all day every day. We do English fasts. No english!!! SOOOOO hard, but rewarding. I love it. One day I will get it. I know it!! :) I finally got my suit dry cleaned. I smell better now! I ripped it on a seam though. Will I sew it? Probably not. It isnt too bad. Maybe I can show you when I get back in two years! Our district is so small! ITs weird having a district of 3. I think Elder Carver will get his Visa today and leave next week. Elder Carver and Elder Ham are now sleeping in hammocks made of sheets. Its pretty cool but Im a good boy! ;) Im sorry there isnt a ton to talk about. I know you all are expecting something crazy awesome, but nothing new. Its all crazy awesome!! Every week is the same. Oh, I think I will get some pictures printed out and sent your way. Brynn- Please put them up on the Bloggy! Kthnxbi! Oh, two fast sundays down! 22 more to go! I recommend to anyone counting down...count fast sundays. 22 sounds better than 700! haha

Could someone let me know whos in what bowl games and who wins? What about the Heisman race? Please and Thanks.

Guess who I ate lunch with this week? Oh the MTC President. I was scared he was going to make me give a talk or something. Also, the Christmas Devotional was good? Did anyone watch it?
If not, let me tell you something. There is a new thing the church is doing. They made movie things!! Go onto LDS.org and look at the new videos they made. I watched a couple. They were way good! They are all Bible stories..SOoooooyou non-members can watch too. Especially in this Christmas season!

Is it Christmas season? I have no clue. Doesnt feel like it. Feel like a cold day. But we sing Hinos de Natal (Christmas Hymns) during class. Thats fun to sing in Portuguese.

OH MY GOSH! Why have I not told you this Mom...My best friend here, Elder Nielsen, went to BYUI and I know that I met him there. He doesnt remember. Thats not the important thing...UNCLE KENT CLEANS HIS TEETH!!! Way way cool. I find connections here all the time.

Temple was good again today of course.

Oh yeah...maybe you want to know that..... I RECEIVED MY ELECTRONIC VISA!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I will be leaving this country in approximately 6ish weeks. Meaning I could be in the MTC for close to 11 weeks..but thats alright, more training! Im grateful I got it. Scary, but way cool!

Ola minha familia e amigos!!!

Im alive!!!! Cool, huh?!

SHOUT OUTS!!!
First of all, all you that have written me and not recieved a letter back..they should be there! I spent more than a few hours writing letters. 9 to be exact..So I thought they would have been there but Im sorry they havent. Theyre coming. IF I have to be patient for yours, you can do the same! ;)
AMI - Thank you for all the updates on the Ducks and on your life. Your life sounds crazy..but guess what..God has given us a tool to help all the stress..What do you think that is? PRAYER and the comfort of the Holy Spirit! Its true. Youre amazing. Thank you for all the Dearelders!
STEPHANIE BLACKHAM - In your letter, I told you I would probably never see Elder Heiner. I lied.. I TAUGHT HIM A LESSON IN PORTUGUESE!! Yeah, it was incredible. I even got a picture with him. He will probably tell you about it.
NAVI VOLCY - I know you might not be reading this but I pray you do. Someone please tell her to read this because I met your brother!!! Yeah, I ran into Elder Volcy. It was way cool! I see him all the time now!
BRYNN- That picture..yeah, that was really from Elder Christensen. He is so funny! Hope you liked the Love Story!
JANICE LONEY - Thank you for your uplifting words. Im so grateful for them. Keep following the Lord. Your words help me a lot so thank you!
NICOLE ALLEN - Thank you for the letters. Im glad to hear your Thanksgiving was good. Mine was awesome! Keep it up! :)

And now about my week. It has been an up and down week. Last Tuesday..I was priviledged to hear an apostle of God speak. Elder D. Todd Christofferson. He talked on how the Joy of Christ will swallow up our afflictions. It was so powerful to see him. He also thank us for our efforts. It was cool! Then Thanksgiving I heard words from ANOTHER apostle of God. Elder Russell M. Nelson. Wow. IT was amazing. I actually liked his wife's talk more than his. She talked about 4 examples of real life situations where humans gave up their humanly life to serve God. One example was her husband. He was the first one to preform open heart surgery. The text books told him never but he listen to the Lord and followed the Spirit. Now look at how many lives are saved because of him. He then put that career down and served God as an Apostle. WOW!! Then He talked on Thanksgiving and Giving Thanks. He told us the Hallel= praise. And went into a whole bunch of definitions and stuff. I loved it. He also told a really cool story about the him opening up the church in Russia. It was way awesome!! We didnt have sandwichs. It was a normal Thanksgiving dinner..but the food wasnt the best. We also did a service project making 8000 injury kits. Yeah, it happened in a few minuntes. We made this HUGE assembly line thing. It was So cool and we all sang hymns while doing it. I LOVED it. Then at night, we all got popcorn and watched 17 Miracles. It was soo good! I hate to say this, but it was probably the best Thanksgiving Ive had. Yeah, the day is for Thanks, not food or football. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE those, but giving thanks was SO cool! I will be ever grateful for this Thanksgiving. But...I also missed everyone so bad. The last few days ive been coming down with some major home/frind sickness. Oh well, It is being swallowed up with the Joy of Christ! I love it here. I do I do I do!
I was released as Zone Leader. Shortest lived zone leader but it was incredible. I learned so much and I know why I was called only for a week. God works in mysterious ways. He does! Oh..sooo...Elder Valdez and Elder Christensen are gone. Yeah, they both received their visas and are now gone. Last night like 20 people sang God be with you Till We Meet Again in portuguese! SO COOL! My district is a whole 3 Elders. With one probably leaving in a week or two. Please pray that Gods will be done. And that I will have the comfort that Gods will is being made manifest about my Visa. Mom, You might want to look through my travel packet and give the travel agent a ring. Thats what my district said they did.
Lessons with the investigators have been pretty good. I had to meet new ones because of my new companions but its been alright. The language is coming a lot better. I can teach lessons now, so that must mean something good I guess. Check this out: Yesterday, we went into a lesson planning on talking about Chastity and Heaven. The spirit told me "Heck no! He needs to gain more faith and read the Book of Mormon" I told him a bunch of stuff and he felt my love for him and he is going to read it!!!!!
Last thing: My district and another Portuguese district did "The Tower Challenge" we ate a whole tower or Frosted Flakes. It was like 65 bowls! and we drained it! It was so awesome. I have a picture.

I love you all. Please pray to God. PLease read the Book of Mormon. It isnt my invitation, but it is the Lords invitation. Im just His mouthpiece. I pray for you all every. single. day!!!

I will leave you with something an old man told me in the Temple today "May your life be wonderful"

I love you all. Be good and be happy!

Loves,
~Elder Ryken Lakey

Hello Shmello!!

Soooo, my week. Nothing too exciting or new. I still dont have me electronic visa so its looking like I will have to be reassigned to the United States. But hey, thats alright with me. I just want to get out and share this awesome news of Jesus Christ with everyone!! Anyway, my companion, Elder Knowles left this morning. He got his visa so he is out of here. So now im a single zone leader for awhile and they havent given me new companions. Its weird having him gone. He helped me SO much!! I will see him in like 2 months though. Last Tuesday, Tad R. McCallister of the Presidency of the 70 spoke at devotional. He talked on the apostasy and the loss of the gospel. It was really good. This week is a holiday week meaning we will probably have an apostle speak tonight. And Thursday we will probably have one or 2 more. STOKED!!! Zone leader has been awesome! I LOVE getting to know and befriend the new missionaries. This last district that came in are some of my best buds now! Cant wait to meet the new ones. I love training them..even thought I dont know much more than them and they are sometimes older than me!! Haha I like it though. It takes away from some of my studing time but thats alright because the Lord is definitely blessing me!! This week, here me out...we got both of our investigators preparing for baptism!!! I asked Juan and it was so cool! They really are progressing..and so is my language!! I can talk a lot better. I can understand just about everything that is being said, but im starting to get better at talking. I love it! Story time: We were teaching Juan once and his friend showed up so we taught them both. And at the end, we asked one of them to pray and they argued. But then Juan finally did and the whole prayer, he was chastising his friend. And asking God to bless him with humility and that he would pray next time and stuff. It was really funny. I made another mistake..I was praying and wanted to say "Thank you for our teacher, Brother Duerden"... I said prophet instead of teacher. It was funny! Thank you Qile Lakey, Tomas, Ami Hines, Erika Jeungling, Kirsten Daines, Nicole Allen, Brynn Lakey, Alex Morgan, and Stephanie Blackham for the letters this week. YOU ALL ARE AWESOME!!! Now, tell Colin to write me about his call. And Adam. And maybe if my family missed it last week, I would love to hear from you!!! Dearelder.com is so easy. Just follow the steps. It takes a couple minutes. And if you have questions, ask someone. But really, Shaunelle, Darek, Jantsen.....C'mon!!! I love you guys..but I dont love your inability to write me! Voce deve escrever me! Eu quero escutar sobre seus vidas!! Por favor? Obrigado! ;)

Man, I dont know what else to say. I know Im a little boring but its the same schedule every week. Nothing crazy spectacular. I played 4 square during gym and i dove to get the ball and got in trouble. And almost got 4 square taken away for the rest of gym. Woopsies!

The MTC is weird. Its a place where you feel the Spirit SO strong at times, and other times it feels like the Spirit is nowhere to be found. You rely on it so much!! Ive loved learning the language of the Spirit. If you dont know it, find out. Its amazing!! I went to the temple a few hours ago. It was amazing. I did sealings again. There is no way im not being married in the house of the Lord. WOW! Thats all I have to say.

Eu sei que Deus vive. Ele filho, Jesus Cristo, Morreu para nos. Seu expiacao e real. A igraja De Jesus Cristo dos santos, dos ultimas dias e como nos vivemos Deus outra vez. A igreja e verdadeiro. Ler O livro de Mormon. Voce precissa a verdade em seu vida. Eu amo muito eles!!

I love everyone that is reading this right now. I do. Thank you for your thoughts and prayer. I expect to hear from you familia!

Um abraco,

FAMILY! FRIENDS! PEOPLE! CHILDREN!!!!!

Well, What's new in my life? Nothing. Its the same ol MTC. Its so crazy here. Waking up at 6:30 and not coming back to bed until 10:30...studying the whole time. WOW!!! I didnt know I had it in me! Thanks to God, Im able to stay awake and attentive! As for the language...? Yeah, its still hard. I can understand a LOT of it, i just have a horrible memory making it really hard for me to speak it. But..our investigaor is now our teacher. He was fake but now he knows us best. Check this out guys...Thursday had to have been one of the worst days I have ever had. I was so upset. I was not being possitive about this experience. So, I got down on my knees, prayed to my Father in Heaven who knows me best, and asked Him to please bless me with comfort, peace, and something to be able to help me. Well, the next morning, Friday, thats when the investigator came in. We were supposed to teach a lesson that we hadnt prepared, so we didnt have to do that. And guess what?! The whole lesson was in ENGLISH!! I could understand everything and ask any questions I want. SO grateful for that answered prayer. The general authority that spoke was some guy that takes care of all the foreign affairs for the church and the visas and stuff. It was really cool how much God has played a role in letting us get into other countries. Curt Bateman left this last week. Crazy!! Scott Laughlin didnt get his visa yet so they reassigned him to the Salt Lake City Utah mission. weird! He leaves tomorrow. My companion Elder Knowles and Elder Valdez will probably be getting their Visas this week. Now, when can it be my turn...? portuguese...Man its tough. It gets frustrating but Im plugging through.

My district is fun. I really like the bonds we are making. Elder Christensen might be the funniest person in the world. Goofiest, but funniest.

What else.....oh yeah.....I AM THE ZONE LEADER FOR MY BRANCH!!!!!! Uh yeah, that was nuts. Not even two weeks in and Im supposed to be the example to the whole entire branch? I cant even pray that well in Portuguese. But God knows what I need and I guess this is it. Tomorrow, I train all the new missionaries in our branch. Weird!!!

Im really wanting to dry clean my suit since I have to wear it 16 hours of the day!! Im hoping to get enough money build up on my card to clean it this next week. The food is wonderful. My lips are finally healing. I still dont have many pictures...I should take more. I will send them to you mom. Brynn can put them up on the blog. Thanks again Brynn for doing that. Youre awesome! And yeah..Mckenzi Hamm?!? CRAZY!!!!

Anyway, how is life in the real world? I still have no updates on the Ducks...Im dissapointed in you Ami, Ashley, and Joe!! ;) Is the United States still in existance? Whats going on outside of this place?!? Any new fads? How are the new movies? Updates people..updates!!! I have received two letters, both from Nicole. Hello people..Dearelder is FREEEEE!!!! You can send 3 a day if you want!! It isnt hard. Ami said you guys dont know my mailbox number..well, its #310. I sent you guys my address. And now that everyone has it, Im expecting some love! I losing in the mail count race...All my siblings...Im expecting one Dearelder.com from all of you guys this week. If not, there will be consequences when I get home! :)

I love you guys. Every single person reading this right now. It means you care. And that brings joy to my life. I have learned so much lately. About me. About life. About what i want in life. One of the number one things is to LOVE PEOPLE!!! I dont really care if they smell or look different or annoy you. LOVE THEM!!! That is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!! But, there is something else that beats that...the number one thing I have learned thus far is...God lives. He loves me. He wants the best for me. And to follow HIS will, not your own. Rely on the Holy Spirit to direct your life. It works! It really does!!!
Thank you all for the emails. Im so sorry I cant respond to them all. Kirsten, You go girl!! keep on keeping on!! Ami- Thanks so much for your words! Im glad you care. and Janice- Thank you so much. You are a fantastic person. Thank you for sharing with me.

I love you guys. I pray for you all every day. Im in ALMA already! Cool, huh?!? But yeah, I love you guys so much. Miss you tons! But 2 weeks down already!! We are 2 weeks closer! Keep going in the right path everyone. Let God take control of your life. He lives and loves. He really does!!

Love Love Love!

TUDO BEM!!!!

Family! Friends! Everyone...WHATS UP?!?! I am alive believe it or not. I dont know how i am alive though. This MTC thing is incredibly hard. Many tears shed. But absoulelty the best thing in the world!! The first day..yeah, class was in portuguese. I cant understand what I am being taught but slowly things are coming along. I can pray and bare testimony in portuguese. Crazy, huh?!? I have a district of 6 of us. We all live in the same room. Its a tight squeeze, but I love us. My companion, Elder Knowles is so cool! He knows Mitchel Scott and plays lacrosse so that has been really good. He is brilliant. He teaches me so much stuff. God definitely had a role in placing my companion. All of the Elders in my district have taken a lot of language study so they know how to speak well, especially spanish, so they are leaps and bounds ahead of me. But im pushing through and its amazing!! I have seen Curt, Tracie, Scott.. and some others that I knew from school. It is so inspired here. All the teachers and workers are great. The devotionals are awesome. Tonight a general authority is coming. I cant wait!! I love singing hymns here. All of us singing is amazing. I can also sing is portuguese, thats awesome!! My second day here....we taught an investigator in portuguese. What the heck man?!? Crazy! The food here is amazing. The wraps and salads are solid! Yes mom, I am eating fruits and vegetables...in fact, thats the majority of what I eat!

Thanks for the package familiy!! Its awesome to know you care and love for me and know whats most important ;) The weather here is so dry!! Sunday morning I woke up with blood all over...stupid lip cracked!! Its really weird being on a scrict schedule. Sometimes it is really hard! I get frustrated a lot, cry some, but the joy far exceeds all the bad. I know that one of these days the language will start clicking for me.

Ready for a funny story? Its somewhat bad so if you dont want to here a naughty word, look away.... So I was teaching the second lesson in portuguese and I was just talking to the investigator. I was asking him "Did you enjoy work today?"....Bad news..I used the wrong verb for enjoy..Yes, it meant enjoy, but it also meant sexually enjoy. I went back and looked and it was (pardon my french) orgasm....GAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was so embarrassing. Now I know not to use that word every again! haha

What else? I cant really think. In the top corner my time clicker thing is counting down. I dont like it.

Oh yeah, Tuesdays are my P-days for now at the MTC. So, expect an email then. I forgot to bring my address card so i dont remember so I will have to send it to you. Im sorry. Once you get it, please put it on facebook so people can send me letters. Also, please tell people to send me "Dearelders.com"'s. Its the easiest fastest way to get to me!

Im sorry about the dogs and car and house. I know it will come along. Just keep pushing through family!!

Well today i had the opportunity to go to the temple and do sealings. HOLY CRAP!!!!! SO AMAZING!! Family, Freinds, everyone...the church is true. My testimony has grown so much. We need to put all our Faith in God. If I can learn some portuguese in one week, anyone can do anything. I have relied on the holy ghost so much. He lives. God Lives and so does his son, Jesus Christ. I KNOW it to be true. Keep me in your prayers and I will keep you in mine! haha I could use some help on the uplifting spirits thing and learning portuguese down. Its gone by so incredibly slow, but thats alright. It will pick up, I know it. I hear that the first 2 weeks feel like two years and the next two years feels like 2 weeks. SWEET!!! "I have been called for this work not because of who I am, But for who I will become!" Pretty cool, huh?! Cant wait to get down to Brazil but it will come. I love you guys with all my heart. I miss you...kinda...not really. Havent really had anytime to think about you guys but I pray for you. Keep it up family and friends.

Keep on keeping on!

I love you all. I really do. Thats one thing Ive learned! Miracles happen....

Anyways, my time is up. Im sorry its all over the place. I will send you a letter soon.  But just remember, Im alive!! haha

Tell people to write me so I can write them. I need their addresses.

LOVE, Elder Lakey

Farewell Talk

Good morning brothers and sisters. What an honor. I feel so blessed to be here this day, and would like to publicly thank you all for coming. I have family and friends here from hundreds of miles away, just to hear me speak. Its my turn to grow up and give a big boy talk. What a hard task that is..not only giving a big boy talk, but growing up!! But my time has finally come! When I chose to speak on the 30th, I didn't realize that I had to follow last weeks primary program! That was fantastic. Brothers and sisters, I hope today you bare with me as I speak these words to you. I am not the best public speaker and hoping that will change! I sometimes I find myself reading my whole talk, so Im sorry if that happens!

Let us rejoice brothers and sisters!! God lives! His Son Jesus Christ lives. I would like to speak on the protection that comes from our older brother, the perfect example to the world, my savior and redeemer, Jesus Christ. God has set up a way for us to be protected from damnation and that is through Jesus Christ, and only through Jesus Christ.

I agree wholeheartedly with paul when he writes his epistle to the Ephesians "For we awrestle not bagainst cflesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the drulers of the edarkness of this world, against spiritual fwickedness in high places." Through 19 years of my life, I have had some battles with the physical struggles of life. But the spiritual struggles far outweigh them. Paul gives us a perfect way to be protected from Satan. It is found in Ephesians 6:11-17

11 Put on the whole aarmour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we awrestle not bagainst cflesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the drulers of the edarkness of this world, against spiritual fwickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
 14 Stand therefore, having your loins agirt about with btruth, and having on the cbreastplate of drighteousness;
 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of apeace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of afaith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery bdarts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of asalvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
First: Loins girt about with truth- Your loins refer to the hips and waist area. Gird means to be clothed or wrapped. It also means to be ready for action. To have your "loins girt about with truth" means to be wrapped, clothed, and protected by truth, chastity and virtue.. ready for the action of the onslaught that Satan will throw your way.
Breastplate of Righteousness- Obviously the breastplate protects our vital organs. Having righteousness be the most important thing we strive for, we are protecting our spiritual lives.
Feet Shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace- President Harold B Lee said "“Your feet … represent your goals or objectives in life. … Preparedness is the way to victory, and ‘eternal vigilance is the price of safety.’ … The tide of victory rests with him who is prepared”
Shield of faith- In order to be protected from Satan's fiery darts, we must build our faith on nothing more than Jesus Christ and his gospel. It is also important to note that this shield must be built and strengthened. It can be upgraded so to say. You can have a very large shield by working toward strengthening your faith in Jesus christ. How well does your shield fit? Does it wear down and slip when the darts actually hit it?
Helmet of Salvation- If we have our thoughts on Christ and His salvation, we will be protected from poor thoughts. We need to have our "eye single to the glory of God"
Sword of the Spirit- Taken from an article in the Jan 2009 New Era.. "A sword is a weapon used to strike at the enemy. The word of God is “sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12), and the power of the Spirit can “carry [the truth] unto the hearts of the children of men” (2 Nephi 33:1), help people to “know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5), and even “thrash the nations” through the preaching of the gospel (D&C 35:13). With our testimony and the power and peace of God’s Spirit, we can strike against and conquer the enemy of all righteousness." May we use this sword to kill satan's plan of destroying the world. Use your sword of the spirit to help others realize the protection and goodness of Jesus Christ.
Although we may have our full armor of God on, Satan will continue to want to go to war with us, knowing that he can wear our armor down.
In 3 Nephi 11:29, we read that Satan is “the father of contention”, “the author of all sin” (Helaman 6:30), and the “enemy unto God” (Moroni 7:12).. Satan truly does anything and everything he can do to tear us down. He knows where our weaker parts of our armor are and will attack them. He will send the fieriest of fiery darts at us. He wants us to fail. and when we do, he laughs. He knows that Gods plan for us it to have eternal life which will be more glorious and perfect than any of us can fathom. He is jealous. He is jealous of our bodies and wants to destroy them! Alma 41:10 says that "wickedness never was happiness" That is satans goal.. for us to be miserable. Romans 3:23 reads "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" I have sinned..and on more than one occasion. But does this mean we are damned? Are we cut off from the presence of our Lord? In 2 Nephi: 2:18. We read that Satan is “the father of all lies”. When we sin, Satan is obviously present..but he continues to try to convince us that there is no way out of it. There is no more hope for us. Brothers and sisters, this is the falsest false. Although Satan can try to convince us there is no way out and that we will have no eternal life, I know that I have a savior who was persecuted, suffered, and died for me..for me to be able to live with God again!! And this is the truest true! And this is the protection that Jesus Christ offers us.
I love what Elder Uchtdorf has to say about this.. "It is not repentance per se that saves man. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that saves us. It is not by our sincere and honest change of behavior alone that we are saved, but “by grace that we are saved, after all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23)."
It is not the act of repenting that saves us, although me must do it, but it is made possible through Jesus Christ blood. HE is the reason we even have the opportunity to repent. This blood that was shed for you and I is single handedly the most precious gift given to us. It is the ultimate protection given to us. It is to save us from damnation to be able to live with our Father in Heaven again. This past semester at BYU Idaho, I had the opportunity and privilege to take an Early Christian History class. The book we read is called "The Story of Christianity" written by Justo L. Gonzalez. Justo is not a member of our church. I find it a testimony builder to me that we studied from a non-members book, and led by the spirit to know which was truth and what was false or bias information. Back in the early church, their communion used bread and wine. There was much debate about this topic, but many believed in the doctrine of transubstantiation . This was the belief that after consecration, the bread and wine was transformed into the literal flesh of Jesus Christ and the actual blood He shed..yet still being in bread and wine form. Today, we still practice the communion, or sacrament, but do not believe that we are eating flesh and drinking blood. Rather this be a sign unto us all of the great gift Jesus Christ has preformed for us.
I quote Elder Holland "As a final and specially prepared Passover supper was ending, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his Apostles, saying, “Take, eat” (Matt. 26:26). “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). In a similar manner he took the cup of wine, traditionally diluted with water, said a blessing of thanks for it, and passed it to those gathered about him, saying: “This cup is the new testament in my blood,” “which is shed … for the remission of sins.” “This do in remembrance of me.” “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come”. surely that is why this particular ordinance with all its symbolism and imagery comes to us more readily and more repeatedly than any other in our life. It comes in what has been called “the mostsacred, the most holy, of all the meetings of the Church. Perhaps we do not always attach that kind of meaning to our weekly sacramental service. How “sacred” and how “holy” is it? Do we see it as our passover, remembrance of our safety and deliverance and redemption? What is stressed in both prayers is that all of this is done in remembrance of Christ. In so participating we witness that we will always remember him, that we may always have his Spirit to be with us…"
How do we remember Christ? I pray that we all take more time during the sacrament to truly remember Christ. To remember the price he paid for us. May we all use this protection He has given us. Let us use the armor of God that Paul speaks of..and when the adversaries darts pierce us, may we use the Atonement. I think about me being the cause of some of his pain, and then not using the atonement. What a terrible feeling. Use it. Use the perfect protection from being cut off from the presence of God, to drink of the blood of Christ and in so doing, using Gods Grace to be saved eternally. This I know to be true.
Well, here it is. Its my time brothers and sisters. I would like to leave you with my testimony of the truthfulness of this gospel. God lives. Jesus Christ lives. This is his church. His gospel. If it wasn't, I would not spend two years of my life walking around. Its true. I know that the sacrament is such a beautiful reminder of Gods loves and Jesus' sacrifice. There is hope for us. We are not damned once we sin. Repentance is real. Gods love for us is everlasting. I know without a doubt that there is eternal life. It has been made known unto me. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet of God who at a young age, desired to know the truth. He as an unlearned, illiterate boy, then translated the Book of Mormon from plates of Gold. This book works hand in hand with the Bible to show us the way to salvation. It is the word of God. I have a prophet today, along with apostles, who talk directly to God. To lead me, guide me, and warn me. This man, Bishop Bateman, is called of God to lead this ward. He is one of the best men in the world and has so much love for us. Look around you. There are mortal angels right next to you. I truly believe people in our life today have been placed there, at this time, in this place, for a certain reason. I thank everyone for all the love and support you have shown me. I cant wait to be able to befriend the people of Brazil. To teach them about God and Jesus Christ. That they live! I will be back in two years!! It will be a hard two years, but who cares. I can do hard things! For Israel!!
